Tragedy at Overbrook High School: Student dies after being shot across the street from our school.

           By Delroy Simpson

On Thursday April,11. 17-year old Bernard Scott was shot across the street as Tustin playground when a fight between groups of teenagers became violent. Two pulled out guns and started firing at least four shots and one of the bullets struck Bernard; a Good Samaritan took him to lankenau hospital where he later passed away. Inside, our school was locked down for about 90 minutes, I even heard helicopters hovering above the rooftop. The next day at our school, the environment drastically changed. A normal day of students laughing, cracking jokes and smiles were immediately replaced by half-empty classrooms, tears and crying as well as students paying their respects to Bernard. On Tuesday, students and teachers came together to remember Bernard. Many overcame with emotion, such as Bernard’s closest friends shared their memories of him. Others such as special speakers, teachers and our principal Ethelyn Payne-young shared their thoughts. Ms. Young said something very memorable to me ‘’ This is not representative of our young people! All of our young people are not thugs! All of our young people are not criminals! Finally, everyone released balloons into the air to honor Bernard. The Death of Bernard Scott left an impact on our school, it could raise some new questions as well. For me I hope events like this will never happen again.

Changing Taste as a Gamer: Why I am beginning to choose PC over game consoles

By John Watson

For those who closely follow the video game industry like myself, the “seventh generation” (Which consists of Microsoft’s Xbox 360, Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo’s Wii) of game consoles are slowly coming to an end as new generations of consoles are entering the picture.

Nintendo kicked things off with the Wii U, Sony unveiled it’s plans for the PlayStation 4 and Microsoft recently unveiled their new console the Xbox One. While there are many people out there who are excitedly awaiting the companies’ new consoles of tomorrow, for myself I am not very excited for the new systems.

Two years ago my mother brought a Dell inspiron laptop for the whole household and I was suddenly introduced to emulators, the digital distribution service Steam and a unique puzzle game “Portal 2” showed me the potential and advantages that playing video games on PC can offer. As I get older, I am becoming tired of companies’ promising a “new” console that would represent a “new generation of gaming”.

In my opinion it seems that back in the 1990’s for example, when game consoles were the standard for playing video games, if a company were to unveil a new game console and said that the system represents the future, I would have believed them. Back in the 1990’s video game consoles had personality, for example the experience you would get on the Sega Genesis was very different then the experience you would get on a Super Nintendo and so on. These days the cycle which I call “The console circle of life” has gotten pretty boring to me: A Company announces a new system, releases it to stores, it stays on the market for six or more years until the company announces a new “project” Yawn!!

But that’s my opinion. In the end, it all comes down to your personal preference. Neither is superior, so it up to what you prefer. For myself I am willing to choose PC because of the bigger library of games, customizable hardware and software and overall experience.

Leaving Overbrook High School

By Taylor Accooe

5/24/13

Most high school students intently dream about the day they will walk across the stage on Commencement Day and receive their diplomas.. They are under the impression they will be free from all work in their life, and be able to finally live. They soon realize the biggest decisions in their life will soon be made and their work has just begun.

A person graduating from high school can take many directions in life, but it all depends on your attitude and approach to adulthood and responsibility, To begin with, many graduates run from their parents and desire to go to college as far away from home as possible. When graduates move away, they get their first taste of living away from home, which brings added responsibilities.

Cooking, cleaning, and doing laundry are a few examples of how college students have to learn to provide for themselves. I graduate from Overbrook High School on June 19th I’m very nervous because I’m becoming an adult. Once I step out of this building I’m on my own, but then I start to think of how successful I’ll be and that pushes me forward so the fear subsides.

Adolescents are faced with developmental tasks at many points as they grow up, but there are a few stages in life when young people meet multiple challenges all at once. I’m faced with many challenges on a daily basis. but all I can do is think about where I started and where I have ended up. When I entered high school, I couldn't wait to grow up. Now that I'm leaving high school I want to be a kid again.

Moving On

By John Watson

At this time of year we look forward to new endeavors trying to fulfill our goals to achieve success. As a proud senior of Overbrook high I can say that there has been a lot of things to look back on that has helped shaped students.

Digital Connectors has allowed aspiring students to get exposed to new technology and to also present them to the general public. This had shown people of the community that their children are participating more into educational programs and are looking beyond their natural expectations.

Not only have we shown of modern technology, but we expressed our God given talents in an EducationWork's trip which had different schools show of their talented students in a single show. The education works program has also helped students in obtaining jobs for their future development in an working environment.

The school’s Success Center, and Library have played a huge part in allowing students to complete their assignments, and apply for colleges, etc, to forge them into true seniors. PrimeMovers also played a part in getting students involved with journalism, by inviting radio host Troy Wilmore to the library for a short interview, and to join as a co-partner in getting Overbrook High School students out there on the map again.

The potential of students are limitless, so programs like Prime Movers allow students to show what they're capable of and to take part in their community. A program like this can form better leaders for our society at a much younger age. By introducing students to political issues that involves decision making, can shape them from a young age to understand their government to make better decisions in their life and to participate more into their community as they should.

It would be beneficial for America to have higher expectations for their students to see them perform better, and to be more involve in government activities, and not just extracurricular. To do this doesn't require a lot of money, it just needs to allow students more access to news teams, politicians, and successful individuals, with this being  done there will be more leaders in today's society to achieve changes for the better of the world.
